There’s been a lot of discussion about Facebook’s security problems. Mark himself admired the problem during the interview with Walt at D8. Just a bit later Facebook took measures to resolve the issue and a lot of amendments were made in Facebook’s security settings. But it seems that instead of improving security problems, facebook has messed things up or is just blowing in our eyes in this regard.

Right now, facebook is undergoing the worst ever security hiccups. One can’t even imagine how mercilessly his personal details are being shared with the world. And there’s no urgent solution. It is not related to your account/password or anything. It is not like a case in which your password is compromised and you could resolve the issue by changing the password or security question. It is even worse! In fact users are being logged into random facebook accounts instead of their own when they log in!!
daniedizledani
Just a while ago, I logged into my Facebook account to find that I was logged into someone else’s account! Seriously! I refreshed the page, and navigated through different stuff to find out that the things were all messed up! I gonna explain all that in detail but first you need to know that I am not alone. After I managed to log in to my own account, I found lots of friends complaining about the same problem!

You can see this is some random girl. She is not even from my friends. And none of the news feeds are from my friends. I didn’t try but I am very sure I was able to update her status. And that’s not simple. When I navigated the links on the left hand, some interesting things happened. I was able to navigate through all of her and her friends’ photos and profiles. But when I clicked on ‘Edit my profile’ link under her profile picture, I was surprised. I was now logged into another girl ABC Zafer’s account without any need to log out or anything! Look for yourself:

Interesting? Really! But that doesn’t end here. I went back to ‘News Feed’ and another surprise was waiting for me! The left side bar was still telling me that I was logged into XYZ Talat’s account but the news itself were from my friends! Here’s a screenshot:

Some large e-commerce sites with product pages created from manufacturer’s databases are seeing less traffic to those pages.

Google’s spokesman for page rankings has confirmed that the company made a major, permanent change seeking to return “higher quality” pages for product searches. Website managers who make their income from Google search results traffic don’t necessarily agree with quality of Google’s changes.

What Google seems to have done, according to Search Engine Land writer Vanessa Fox, is change the ranking of pages that seem to be auto-produced from databases, and don’t have unique additional content such as user reviews. (Update: Fox writes in the comments below this story: “Rather, I said this was a change to the types of pages that rank well for long tail queries. I simply used an e-commerce site with that type of structure as an example of a type of page that would generally receive long tail traffic that might no longer be considered “high quality” enough to rank well.”)

daniedizledani

At Google’s I/O conference for developers last week, search results spokesperson Matt Cutts told Fox that Google, which makes hundreds of changes per year to its results ranking formulas, had made a very major and permanent change that should bring “higher quality” content to “long tail” searches — specifically, searches for unpopular products that don’t have lots of original Web content created for them.

Website managers who share tips at Webmaster World dubbed the May 1st change “MayDay,” a pun on an old radio distress call term used by ship and airplane pilots. “Traffic dropped 50% in a few days,” one early respondent wrote.

However, the changes haven’t affected all Webmaster World community members the same. For some, traffic went up. What matters is that some sites have seen a sudden, serious drop in Google-referred traffic, which means a similar drop in sales that will affect their businesses’ profitability. Google says that this change is permanent. Many e-commerce sites will need to scramble to find ways to regain Google’s favor.

Facebook was banned by Pakistan’s Supreme High Court, we do a bit of researching to see how Facebook stands now. Well, the results are not very outstanding and it seems, Facebook is taking a heavy blow because of the ban. And if the ban supposing, continues for more than just 3 days, Facebook will be in deep trouble. According to Alexa Ratings, Facebook stands as 3rd best web page in Pakistan. So of course, the damage will be huge.

The Facebook group “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!” has generated heaps of criticism in the predominantly Muslim Islamic Republic of Pakistan – Muslims faithfuls set up online campaigns and other protests to grab the attention of the authorities.

A group of lawyers called the Islamic Lawyers’ Movement went a step further today and petitioned the court to order a blanket ban on Facebook in Pakistan. About 45 million Pakistani use the social networking site, according to various reports.

Justice Ejaz Chaudhry of the Lahore High Court directed the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority to block Facebook until May 31, when the court will open a detailed hearing into the case, and to submit a written reply to the petition by that date.
daniedizledani

This is the most important of the 3. Let us see, what the damage is and how drastic it can be?. As of now, the Page Rank seems to be the same. I will update the post tommorow again with more fresh results!.

This is the number of people who visit Facebook, and as we see the stats have seem to have been coming down from quite some time. But notice how the figures came tumbling down from yesterday. A drastic change of -6.73% . It seems, it had all started when the “Draw Muhammad (PBUH)” controversy started.

From all this we can see, that people have started boycotting Facebook and it (Facebook) sees a down run of users and pageviews. More fresh results will come tomorrow, which by my prediction, will be even bizarre and stunning as Facebook was banned today, not yesterday. So wait on, and let us wait for tomorrow’s result.

When a piece of software is automatically installed on your computer without your knowledge, it’s called malware. But what do you call it when Facebook apps are added to your profile without your knowledge? We discovered Wednesday that this is actually happening, and stopping it isn’t as easy as checking a box in your privacy settings.

These apps appear to be related to Facebook’s sharing tools. The sites currently leaving this trail all have Facebook Connect integration, and the list includes heavyweights such as the Gawker network of blogs, the Washington Post, TechCrunch, CNET, New York Magazine, and formspring.me.
daniedizledani

If you visit certain sites while logged in to Facebook, an app for those sites will be quietly added to your Facebook profile. You don’t have to have a Facebook window open, you don’t need to signed in to these sites for the apps to appear, and there doesn’t appear to be an option to opt-out anywhere in Facebook’s byzantine privacy settings.

It isn’t entirely clear what information these apps are pulling from user profiles or feeding back to Facebook. They don’t show up automatically on profile pages, but if you go to an application’s profile page, you can see a list of your friends who also have that app installed, essentially getting a unintentional peek at their browsing habits. On the other side there are sites like the Washington Post’s, which has a Facebook Network News box showing a list of your friends who have recently shared a Washington Post article on Facebook.

Opting out of Instant Personalization does not stop these apps from appearing. Unfortunately, removing these kinds of applications requires more vigilance than just un-checking a box.

To see a list of your current Facebook applications, click Account in the top right corner of Facebook, then select Application Settings from the drop down menu. If you click on the Edit Settings link for one of the new applications, you’ll always see one tab called Additional Permissions that has a box that’s unchecked by default. Checking it will give that application permission to “Publish recent activity (one line stories) to [your] wall.” Sometimes there is a second tab with an option to add a bookmark for that link to your wall. And a few apps also have a Profile tab where you can add a Tab to your profile for that site and pick its privacy level.

There is some evidence of how Facebook’s newly rolled-out Open Graph API are supposed to be used for cross posting comments and reviews on Facebook and external sites. For example, if you are logged in to a site like PCWorld or Macworld using Facebook Connect and you leave a comment on an article, you’ll see a pop-up message asking if you’d like to publish the comment as a story to your wall. If you click Publish, the comment will show up in your friend’s news feeds. They can choose to block all stories from that site.

It’s already been a rough week for Facebook and privacy. Recent issues have revealed a disorganized and buggy platform, and raised concerns about Facebook’s ability to responsibly store and manage users’ private information. Hopefully this latest issue is just another bug and not a new way of operating for the social networking site.

Google’s Chrome browser is shining brightly, and it’s not hard to see why. First, the stats: According to the latest NetApplications figures, Chrome now has 6.7 percent of the browser market–a stunning rise from zero prior to 2009. Competing browsers are either treading water or, as in the case of Microsoft Internet Explorer, in precipitous freefall.

So what explains Chrome’s sudden burst of popularity? Here are five reasons:
daniedizledani

It’s very fast

:

browser is a speed demon. PC World’s performance tests have shown that Chrome has the fastest page-loading times versus leading competitors Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Opera Software’s Opera. Anecdotally, I’ve noticed that the speedy Chrome runs circles around slow, lumbering IE. Sometimes, however, Chrome’s need for speed is annoying. The browser times out too quickly and fails to load web pages because, well, it’s too impatient. Hopefully Google will let users adjust this setting in the future.

It’s very simple

:

Like many Google apps and services, Chrome emphasizes ease of use. Compared with IE, there are fewer menus, options, and features to configure. Usually that’s a good thing, but not always. Sometimes I find myself reverting to IE for, say, the print preview feature. Could you add that, Google?

Better security

:

IE’s security mishaps are well chronicled. To be fair, Microsoft has worked diligently to make its browser more secure, but nagging problems persist. By comparison, Chrome is a paradise of protection due in part to two factors: architecture and obscurity. Chrome’s use of “sandboxing,” isolating Internet commands from the operating system and other apps and data, makes it harder for hackers to load malware onto PCs. At Vancover’s Pwn2Own contest in March, security experts were able to hack the other leading browsers, but not Chrome. In fact, they didn’t even try to hack Chrome, the New York Times reports. It’s important to note, however, that Chrome’s low market share also contributes to its relative safety. If you’re a malware creator, why direct your efforts toward Chrome when IE represents such a big, fat target?

Runs well on older hardware

:

There’s still a very large installed base of Windows XP machines out there, particularly in the enterprise market. Chrome’s speediness is ideal for older hardware with slower components.

Chrome’s ad campaign

:

Google may have inexplicably under-marketed its tepidly received Nexus One smartphone, but it hasn’t made the same mistake with the Chrome browser. A TV ad campaign helped introduce Chrome to the masses, most of whom don’t give much thought to their choice of browser.

Microsoft, of course, will continue to improve Internet Explorer, as will the developers of competing browsers. But Google Chrome’s early success shows that simplicity sells.

Every day 268 million people use Google to search for something. The query goes in, the company’s software programs, called spiders, crawl the Web and deliver back the most relevant links. The interaction is so simple—and the hidden calculation behind the results so complex—that it’s no wonder people tend not to notice much about the process. Who bothers to ask the ingredients of a magic formula?

Since Google’s 1998 debut, the search results page—where a home page query is returned with 10 suggested links on the left and multiple advertiser links on the right—has been through seven subtle redesigns. The most recent, in May 2007, saw the addition of images and video in what was dubbed “universal” search. On May 5, Google began rolling out its eighth iteration, which Marissa Mayer, vice-president of search products and user experience, calls “particularly large and particularly important.”
daniedizledani

For all of its experiments with maps, books, e-mail, and social networking, Google is still an empire built on search. Ninety-seven percent of the company’s $23.7 billion haul in 2009 came from advertising. While Google doesn’t break out what each of its individual ad products such as AdWords or AdSense generates, multiple people within the company concede that Google is as dependent on the “Sponsored Links” generated by search queries as an oil nation is on its wells.

Given that the shift of a single pixel can impact Google’s profits, why would the company ever mess with the most successful product in the history of the Internet? “The Web is always changing, evolving, and innovating,” says Mayer. “It’s important even for sites that people use every day and are very familiar with, like Google, to update their look.”

It’s not just the look that’s been updated. Microsoft’s Bing, Facebook, and Twitter have made a case for the past few years that Google’s search, based on ranking the overall relevance of a Web page, is outmoded, and that the future lies in an integration of relevance with real-time search. In December, Google conceded the point and announced it would begin indexing the Web in real time to help users organize the cacophony emanating from social media.

Some experts are skeptical of introducing complexity to the results pages. “Advanced search almost never works,” says Jakob Nielsen, principal of the Norman Nielsen Group and co-author of the book Eyetracking Web Usability. “People don’t want to use a search engine. They want to get away from a search engine. That’s the reason the advertising works so well—the search engine is one site they want to get away from so they might go to an advertiser.” In other words, Google has thrived precisely because it hasn’t tried to envelop its users in a full-frills experience.

Still, the competitive landscape is changing. Facebook recently surpassed Google as the most visited Web site in the U.S. Microsoft has unveiled its own plans for Bing, which currently comes in a distant third in the battle for eyeballs but is making a play in searches along topics such as travel and shopping. In March, Bing rolled out a design that adjusts the user interface according to the type of search on four of its verticals. So if it’s clear a user is looking to buy a plane ticket, Bing morphs into a travel engine. “It’s a very radical departure from the dominant paradigm of the link-based system on the Web,” says Stefan Weitz, director of Bing. “For every query, presenting results back with the same user experience doesn’t make sense.

Facebook on Wednesday announced that it will open an office in Seattle to build up a new team of engineers as the social network faces continued rapid growth. It’ll be open sometime this summer, engineering manager Ari Steinberg wrote in a post on the Facebook blog; a Seattle jobs page on Facebook says that the office will be located downtown.

“As we grow to meet these challenges, we need to continue to attract the smartest, most talented technologists on the Internet,” Steinberg’s post read. “Seattle has a strong history of innovation and is home to thousands of talented technical people who we want to help us solve the challenges of designing and building the next generation of Facebook.”
daniedizledani

While Seattle hasn’t been the most high-profile hub of technology start-ups in the Web 2.0 era, the region is still the home to massive companies like Microsoft, which has a stake in Facebook thanks to a 2007 investment, and Amazon. Additionally, Facebook announced Wednesday that it has hired Hadi Partovi, the Seattle-based co-founder of music service iLike–which eventually sold to MySpace–as an advisor to help recruit local engineers.

Currently, Facebook has more than 400 million members total, and aims to expand significantly across the Web thanks to its new Open Graph API; right now, it has one engineer on its payroll for every million active users on its site. Steinberg’s post explained that “with this opportunity comes the great responsibility and challenges of keeping the service fast and reliable, at an absolutely enormous scale.” Indeed, earlier on Wednesday Facebook experienced a minor privacy scandal when a bug in its code exposed some otherwise private user data.

Facebook was originally founded in Cambridge, Mass., when CEO Mark Zuckerberg was an undergraduate at Harvard, but is now headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif.

Adobe has launched Photoshop CS5 and Photoshop CS5 Extended, its flagship image editing and compositing programs. Both versions are packed with new features and technology improvements. Photoshop CS5 Extended offers everything in Photoshop CS5, but adds advanced tools for artists working with 3D or motion-based content.

Whenever a new version of an important program comes out, the need for it, depending on the changes, can run the spectrum–from it’s-revolutionary, got-to-have-it-now to ho-hum, I-can-wait-for-the-next-revision. Adobe Photoshop CS5, the latest version that’s sold both individually and as part of Adobe Creative Suite 5, falls between those two extremes ($699 for Standard stand-alone, $1299 for Creative Suite 5 Design Standard; upgrade pricing available). We reviewed a beta.

Among the major updates are features such as Content-Aware Fill, Puppet Warp, and HDR Pro and HDR Toning. There are also new painting effects, a new version of the Camera Raw plug-in, automated lens correction, flexible custom panels, a new workspace switcher, and more.

The new version of Photoshop also offers enhanced media management and Web Gallery integration with Adobe Bridge CS5 and the new Adobe Mini Bridge, both included in the program. Streamlined creative reviews are now available through integration with Adobe CS Review, part of Adobe’s new CS Live online services.

With the new version of Photoshop, Adobe revisits the Refine Edge dialog and adds new functionality to it. Intelligent selection technology offers better edge detection and faster, more accurate masking results with complex subjects. Automatic color decontamination helps eliminate background color around the edges of a selection.

(Image Caption: Photoshop CS5’s edge detection and decontaminate colors features help you make precise selections of complex subjects, enabling faster, more accurate compositing of multiple images.)

Photoshop CS5 introduces the new Content-Aware Fill feature that lets you remove an image element and replace it with details that match the lighting, tone, and noise of the surrounding area so that it looks like the object never existed.

New in Photoshop CS5 is HDR Pro, a feature that gives you more control over the HDR merging process and greater adjustment power over the mapping of tones and the styling of HDR output. You can even create the look of an HDR-processed image from a single photo with the new HDR Toning feature.

The new Camera Raw 6 plug-in supports more than 275 camera models. The utility provides advanced, nondestructive image editing and enhancement for raw files, and other standard formats, including JPEG and TIFF. The updated plug-in lets you remove noise, achieve better quality sharpening, apply new styles of vignettes and film-like grain, and shoot at higher ISO settings.

Photoshop CS5 offers new painting options with the new Mixer Brush and Bristle Tips features. The Mixer Brush lets you define multiple colors on a single tip, and then mix and blend them with the underlying hues on your canvas. Bristle Tips let you control brush stroke characteristics.

Photoshop CS5 Extended has all the features of the standard version, but caters to artists working in 3D. Adobe Repoussé technology lets users create 3D logos and artwork from any text layer, shape, or mask, as well as twist, rotate, and extrude designs. A new library of materials offers a large selection of surfaces and textures.

An improved Adobe Ray Tracer (ART 2.0) engine in Photoshop CS5 Extended offers performance improvements when you interact with and edit 3D models.

Photoshop CS5 Extended is $999, with an upgrade price of $349. It is part of the Design Premium, Web Premium, Production Premium, and Master Collection.
