Adobe has launched Photoshop CS5 and Photoshop CS5 Extended, its flagship image editing and compositing programs. Both versions are packed with new features and technology improvements. Photoshop CS5 Extended offers everything in Photoshop CS5, but adds advanced tools for artists working with 3D or motion-based content.

Whenever a new version of an important program comes out, the need for it, depending on the changes, can run the spectrum–from it’s-revolutionary, got-to-have-it-now to ho-hum, I-can-wait-for-the-next-revision. Adobe Photoshop CS5, the latest version that’s sold both individually and as part of Adobe Creative Suite 5, falls between those two extremes ($699 for Standard stand-alone, $1299 for Creative Suite 5 Design Standard; upgrade pricing available). We reviewed a beta.

Among the major updates are features such as Content-Aware Fill, Puppet Warp, and HDR Pro and HDR Toning. There are also new painting effects, a new version of the Camera Raw plug-in, automated lens correction, flexible custom panels, a new workspace switcher, and more.

Apple introduced its “iAd” mobile advertising platform, which will allow third-party developers to embed advertisements within mobile apps, as part of its upcoming iPhone OS 4. An analyst with Broadpoint AmTech predicts that iAd could earn Apple billions of dollars annually once actualized, but another analyst suggests that the platform could also present its share of legal headaches. In addition to iAd, the iPhone OS 4 update also includes multitasking and a social-gaming hub.

Apple’s “iAd” mobile advertising platform, introduced April 8 along with a variety of other updates to the upcoming iPhone OS 4, may generate billions of dollars for the company once fully integrated into the iPhone’s mobile apps.

During a presentation at Apple’s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters, Apple CEO Steve Jobs displayed a slide suggesting that the iPhone and the iPod Touch was capable of delivering “1 Billion Ad impressions per day,” if users of those devices spent an average of 30 minutes engaging with advertisement-seeded apps.

Now you tube provide great feature for its deaf users also…
YouTube is opening up its auto-caption feature to everybody, a move that benefits not only deaf users, but also people who watch videos in really noisy places, like airport terminals. And since the tool will be able to translate captions into your choice of 50 languages, it should be handy for viewing YouTube clips from around the world. (For now, however, auto-captioning works only with videos in English.)

Auto-captioning borrows some text-to-speech algorithms from Google Voice Search to automatically create captions upon viewer request. As you’d expect from machine-generated captioning, the results aren’t perfect, but they’re fairly accurate for formal presentations and keynote-type speeches with minimal background noise. In other words, auto-captioning gives you a pretty good idea of what’s being said, although some of the finer points may be misleading or just plain wrong. On the plus side, a video owner can download the auto-captions, clean them up, and upload acorrected transcript…..

Google is testing a credit card comparison service… but if you want to try it you’ll have to be really lucky. Oh, and in the UK too.

Last October Google launched a new form of ad that lets users compare prices on products. Essentially Google Product Search but for financial services and with more options for choosing your perfect product, it only worked with US mortgages. Now Comparison Ads are being tested again, this time in the UK for credit cards. Once again though, you’ll only get to try it if you get lucky when you search for credit card related keywords.

Users searching for credit cards see an ad (if they’re lucky) prompting them to click through to to a chart comparing prices from a number of providers. After entering a few basic facts like age and household income they can choose the best price.
